Video Transcript:

At LeadPages, we love creating and sharing things that improve your business results. One technique we’ve found to be really effective is adding an upsell to the checkout process. We’ve seen customers double profits by implementing this one simple strategy. For example, here’s how it works on our site. After someone purchases a LeadPages plan, they see this up-sell page with an exclusive one-time offer if they upgrade their account. We wanted to make this technique as easy as possible for everyone to implement so we created this up-sell page you can add to your checkout process.

We think this page works so well because it’s simple and familiar. When you go to McDonald’s, they ask you if you’d like to value-size your meal, or when you’re at a store, and you buy a few bottles of wine, they’ll let you know that you’ll get a discount if you buy a full case. Pairing a valuable incentive with a friendly ask leads to an incremental increase in revenue.

Typically, an up-sell page would go between your sales or pricing page and your checkout page. However, sometimes this can affect how many customers finish the checkout process. We wanted to implement this page without affecting our conversions, so we added this page after the initial sale was complete. By doing this, conversions were unharmed, but sales revenue improved. This page pairs video and text to drive incremental increases in revenue. The video gives you an opportunity to make an audio and visual connection and explains the value and details of the offer. Over here to the right, we have a text area outlining the offer and backing up what the video says. Everything on the page works together to make the value of the offer compelling and drive an incremental boost in revenue. The best part, you don’t have to be a software company like LeadPages to use this page and the up-sell technique in your own business. For example, let’s say you’re a personal trainer and you want to offer an exclusive one-on-one bonus training session, or maybe you’re a business coach, and you’d like to offer a discounted full day MasterMind invitation when someone books a session. Regardless of what your up-sell is, you can use this page to drive higher sales revenue.

This page is easy to customize for whatever you need. Here’s what you need to know to customize any page inside of LeadPages. To change any text, just click on it and start typing. If you don’t want to use an element or a whole section, just click on the gear icon and select Hide. If you’d like to change colors to match your branding, simply click on the Styles tab and then drag the color picker to whatever colors you’d like to use. To embed a video, just click on this video icon and paste an embed code from any video service like YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, and so on. And, finally, on this page specifically, you need to link up the upgrade button with another checkout page that corresponds to the upgrade. When you’re done, just name the page, and then save the page. All pages created with LeadPages are mobile responsive. As soon as we hit Publish, LeadPages gives us a link we can immediately use. This page is hosted on our LeadPages super fast servers. To add this page to your checkout process, take this URL and add it to the confirmation page field of your shopping cart so when someone checks out, they’ll see this page. You could also host this page on WordPress, or you can download the files and put them on your own server.

  • Workout Anywhere

What checkout or cart do you use for this?

    • Jeff Wenberg

You can use any service to do this. Depending on what service you use, the process will vary. Basically this is how it would work. When someone checks out, you would use the url to this page as the “confirmation” or “thank you” page. Hope that helps!

      • Workout Anywhere

Sounds good. I use a membership plugin and not a cart. Still possible? Would love to incorporate this into my funnel!

        Thanks Jeff.

        • Jeff Wenberg

I would say to be sure reach out to support for your membership plug in. As long as you can select your confirmation page I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

  • I have to say it seems mildly coincidental that a competitor of yours is advertising this same exact methodology, but they have the complete funnel and checkout built in. Is this the beginning of a transition for Leadpages to get into the full funnel game as well?

    • Jeff Wenberg

Hey Mike, thanks for pointing that out. I wish we could take credit for it, but it’s been around since the beginning of advertising. The thing we wanted to point out is that it works incredibly well, and is an incredibly easy way to add revenue to your bottom line. No transitions at this point, just doing what we always do…releasing tools and information that make growing business and adding revenue as easy as we can possibly make it for people. Have a great weekend my man!

      • Yeah I know. I’ve seen it a thousand times. It was more the “timing” versus the template I was referring to.

  • Kyle

Could you recommend a shopping cart service that would be compatible with this method?

    • Jeff Wenberg

Hey Kyle, you can use this method with any. We currently use Brain Tree to process payments at LeadPages. I use Stripe for a personal business. I’ve heard good things about 1shoppingcart and Shopify. I’ve also used PayPal quite a bit in the past. It all depends on the functionality you need…but that should give you a few places to look. Thanks!
